HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS OR SIGHT WORDS
High frequency words are those words which occur most frequently in our written language, for example, the, there, are, is, in. High frequency words often have little meaning on their own, but they contribute a great deal of meaning of a sentence. Some of the high frequency words can be sounded out using basic phonic rules, e.g. "it" is an easy word to read using phonics. However, many of the high frequency words do not follow the rules of phonics and are therefore hard to read in the early stages.
Students will be given a set of High Frequency Word words to study at home. Students will pass off each set at school. Once a set is passed off, your child will be given the next set to work on at home. By the end of first grade your student will have learned 100 sight words. Knowing these high frequency words will undoubtedly help your child become a better reader!
